La diplomatie regagne du terrain dans le bivouac du Dakar 2023. Ce jeudi 5 janvier, à l’issue d’une cinquième étape qui l’a vu porter son avance en tête des opérations à 22’36’’ sur Stéphane Peterhansel et Édouard Boulanger (Audi), Mathieu Baumel (Toyota) came back to his rant from the day before.

The world champion of rally-raid (W2RC) and defending champion on this Dakar with the Qatari Nasser Al-Attiyah had shared his anger on social networks about Equivalence of Technology (EoT). This was revised after the 4th stage of the Dakar 2023 to allocate nearly 11 additional horsepower to the Audi RS Q e-tron hybrids by Stéphane Peterhansel, Carlos Sainz and Mattias Ekström.

“I had the impression that during the first stages, the Audis were still fast enough to fight in front, he told us at the Ha'il bivouac (Saudi Arabia). There wasn't necessarily a need to add power, but it's not up to me. »

The French navigator immediately wrote a message on his social networks to express contrition:

“In the heat of the moment, I reacted harshly to the FIA Technology Equivalence decision. I like to defend my title fairly, and at first the decision didn't seem fair. I now understand the situation better and I would like to apologize for my previous message. »

The race can now, hopefully, resume a less eventful course.
