As this video extract proves, the co-driver used the paper road book to find his way during the special. A prohibited practice since the road-book has been displayed on a digital tablet since 2022. The organization has the road-book in paper format in each passenger compartment in case an emergency arises, but by opening the envelope sealed by ASO on morning of the stage, the crew receives a time penalty.
Furthermore, Ekström-Bergkvist missed a way-point. The penalty is 15 minutes. The first leaders of the Dakar 2023 fall to 14th place in the general classification, 15'33" behind the leaders Carlos Sainz-Lucas Cruz (Audi).
