The Dakar and its organizer Amaury Sport Organization (ASO) wanted to move forward and calmly prepare for the 2023 edition via the presentation of the rally-raid route last June 5. But the sporting side is relegated to the background behind the specter of a criminal act having taken place on the sidelines of the Dakar 2022 according to the DGSI.

The General Directorate of Internal Security (DSGI), according to initial information reported first by RMC Sport, then by Franceinfo this Wednesday, June 22, indicates that an explosion occurred on the night of December 31, 2021 in the assistance truck of Italian pilot Camelia Liparoti, entered in the T3 category with Yamaha and X-Raid.

This explosion was not of accidental origin according to the DSGI, which is currently conducting an investigation. “They noticed a projection of metal balls (inside the vehicle) and elements suggesting an unusual explosive device”, confides a source close to the matter to RMC Sport. However, no demands have been made.

The explosion caused no casualties. Only the driver of the truck, Walter Fortichiari, was inside when the detonation rang out. The pilot and her co-pilot were at their hotel on the eve of the first stage.

ASO reacted during the month of January with this communication : “We were immediately informed by the X-Raid team that the assistance truck of Camélia Liparoti caught fire while driving. The X-Raid team told us that it was most likely an electrical problem. We have stuck to this explanation, but if another origin were to appear today and it requires an investigation, we would obviously be ready to collaborate. »

One day before the explosion of Camelia Liparoti's truck, on December 30, Frenchman Philippe Boutron was seriously injured in the explosion of his assistance pick-up in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). The Saudi authorities had brushed aside the hypothesis of a voluntary act, advocating an “accident” while the French National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) had already taken up the case. The PNAT is still handling the case almost six months after this criminal act.
