A return that will not fail to get people talking in the paddock of the Formula 1. Wednesday, The International Automobile Federation has announced the appointment of Shaila-Ann Rao as advisor to FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The Briton is already familiar with the company, having previously held the position of FIA Interim Secretary General for Motor Sport (June-November 2022) and FIA Legal Director (2016-2018).
When she was first appointed by Mohammed Bin Sulayem at the start of his term in 2022, Shaila-Ann Rao's arrival at the FIA sparked mixed reactions. Indeed, her time at Mercedes as general advisor to the German team and special advisor to Toto wolff, between 2018 and 2022, had raised concerns among several teams who feared a potential conflict of interest. She ultimately only stayed five months at the Place de la Concorde as interim secretary general of the FIA, amid accusations of sexist behavior and bullying from Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
Ben Sulayem reorganizes before the end of his mandate
Shaila-Ann Rao's return to the FIA is therefore somewhat surprising. The lawyer, who practices in Great Britain as well as in France, will advise the FIA President on a range of issues, including regulatory and commercial matters related to the FIA's seven World Championships. She takes up her duties this Thursday, May 1, 2025. In its press release, the FIA states that "Ms. Rao's appointment comes at a pivotal time for the FIA, which is successfully pursuing its organizational transformation and financial reform, as evidenced by the projected operating results for 2024 of €2,2 million, while the Federation inherited a deficit of €24 million in 2021."
“I look forward to advising the FIA President on all FIA World Championships and building on the significant progress that has already been made during his presidential term to strengthen the regulatory and commercial frameworks of the Championships, said Shaila-Ann RaoThe FIA holds a unique place in world sport, and I am delighted to support the FIA at this time and to help the FIA President ensure an even stronger future for motor sport.”
“I am delighted to welcome Shaila-Ann Rao back to the FIA, said Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who is coming to the end of his term as head of the body. Her distinguished track record in global motorsport makes her a valuable asset to me and my team as we continue to strengthen the regulatory and commercial frameworks across all FIA World Championships, benefiting drivers, teams and our member clubs. She will also provide advice on relationships with promoters across all World Championships.

2024 operating results at €2,2 million, hardly surprising with all the fines imposed on F1 and WRC drivers for the wrong word! Will the drivers be given information on the use of all the fines imposed by MBS and his policies?
