Under what circumstances did you meet Gilles Villeneuve?
When I joined Ferrari in 1979, there was a chance that I would find myself alongside Carlos Reutemann. I talked to him about it to tell him that we should work together, but in the end he left the stable. Gilles was already on the team and we became teammates. Basically, I signed as Driver No. 1.
However, it was Gilles who won the first victories for Ferrari that season. Did he suddenly go from teammate to rival?
Absolutely. He established himself in South Africa, then in Long Beach. The pressure was immense. I had to move up a gear, because at the time I had put my whole life into racing. The pressure made me concentrate even more. Before that, I had always been a bit alone in the previous stables where I had ridden. At Wolf, I was the only driver lined up for example. It was a situation that I appreciated.

The only South African F1 World Champion, a spectacular driver in his early days, a nice man who has a very clear-eyed view of his career and perhaps regrets that his sons and nephews were not able to take up the torch in F1!
