Rallye Costa Brava – Romain Dumas: “Our ambition is simply to have fun!”

Absent from rally specials for several months, Romain Dumas decided to line up at the start of this event for fun. Before diving deep into preparation for Pikes Peak (June 22) with Ford, he expects a great battle on unfamiliar roads and with a navigator, Mathieu Tyran, whom he will be discovering.

Costa Brava Rally – Romain Dumas: “Our ambition is simply to have fun!”

How did you come up with the idea of participating in this rally ?

This event had a good reputation with interesting special stages that weren't too far away for us. There's also a well-stocked field with some great cars and several candidates... I watched some videos and it's true that the times look wide and fast...unfortunately, it seems that the rain will be there for three days, which might spoil our fun a little.

Is this a one-off for you, or do you plan to attend several EHRC meetings?

To get a spot, we had to sign up for the championship, but I have no intention of going to any other races. I admit I haven't even looked at the rest of the program. Our ambition is simply to have fun!

What do you know about this event?

Nothing! (laughs). I just know that it's based in Girona, whose signs I see on the motorway when I go to Barcelona or Motorland in Aragon.

Have you looked at the entry list? There are several 4x4s that should be well-driven?

It's true that if it's wet, it will be more of a challenge. I expect Jari-Matti Latvala to be fast and there are a few Lancia Deltas too... It's difficult for me to judge, because I don't necessarily know the drivers. For our part, we will use the Porsche 3-liter RS with which I won the Tour de Corse historique in 2023. The co-driver will change, however, and I will have to discover the collaboration with Mathieu Tyran. Finally, since it's dark, we also put more headlights! (laughs)
