Setting off at dawn from Clermont-Ferrand after a first day of warm-up driving, the 240 crews crossed the Auvergne mountains towards Occitanie. On the agenda for this 489-kilometer stage: three special stages on closed roads with very different profiles, before an open-air evening overlooking the Pont du Gard. A condensed version of what the Tour Auto has to offer: scenic roads, heritage sites, and competition.
The day began with EC3, a 12,3-kilometer special stage through the roads of the Pays Gentiane region, near Riom. The dizzying curves of the section quickly separated the competitors. In the Competition category – VHC period, Pierre Thiriet and Philippe Lenoir came out on top in their Jaguar E-Type 3.8 (#204). In Regularity, the Argentinian duo Jack Oxenford and Ricardo Diaz triumphed in a Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 (#38).
Fords and Porsches take center stage on the Aubrac plateau
Next up was EC4, on the Aubrac plateau. This 13-kilometer special stage offered magnificent panoramas to the crews, but also a demanding route through the Highlands. In the Competition – Historic Vehicle Period category, Émile Breittmayer and his co-driver Stéphane Prévot distinguished themselves at the wheel of their Ford GT40 (#254). In the Regularity category, Nicolas Caylet and Carlos Dos Reis Pinto took the lead in their Porsche 911 2.0L (#15) — a victory they would confirm a few hours later.
Stage 5, held in the late afternoon in the Bas-Vivarais region, concluded the day with a 7,5-kilometer special stage combining tight hairpins and long, fast corners. In the Competition – Historic Vehicle Period category, Sébastien Berchon and Julien Chadenet posted the best result at the wheel of a Jaguar E-Type 3.8 (#206). In the Regularity category, Caylet and Dos Reis Pinto repeated their success, confirming their excellent form with a second consecutive victory in the same classification event.
The procession then made its way to the Pont du Gard to conclude this second stage in style, with an open-air cocktail reception overlooking the Roman aqueduct. Tomorrow, the crews will set off again for a third day that promises to be just as demanding, with two new special stages and a run on the Albi Circuit.
