Contrasted feelings at BMW after a truncated Hyperpole

If the No. 15 BMW seemed to have an interesting pace to challenge for pole position, an exit from the track by Dries Vanthoor annihilated the hopes of the German manufacturer, who is nonetheless optimistic for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

BMW created a bit of a sensation on Wednesday during qualifying. Aboard the #8 BMW M Hybrid V15, Dries Vanthoor set the best time, against all expectations. A time sufficient to obtain the label of outsider for the Hyperpole on Thursday… but the hope of a pole position at 24H of Le Mans was annihilated in the last minutes of the session.

The Belgian driver, although very fast, made a mistake at the Indianapolis corner and caused a red flag. And who says red flag during the Hyperpole, says cancellation of the times! Result: no time was associated with the #15 BMW, which was classified 7th in the session. Thanks to the penalty for the No. 2 Cadillac, the German car will start the 24 Hours of Le Mans on the third row, in 6th place.

“It’s a very big mix of emotions from one day to the next, said Dries Vanthoor. I made a mistake and got stuck. Luckily we don't have much damage, it's just annoying! There is still a long race to go and anything can happen, but I will try to make up for it in the race. »

“In general, we can be satisfied with the qualifications. Having a car in Hyperpole is great, said Andreas Roos, director of BMW M Motorsport. The provisional pole achieved [Wednesday] by Dries was extraordinary and motivated everyone in the team. It was good to see what Dries can do with the car. In Hyperpole, everyone went to the limit to get the last hundredth of a second on the lap. Unfortunately, Dries locked his wheels and went straight into the barriers. Luckily, he's okay, which is by far the most important news. We want our guys to give their all, especially in Hyperpole. It didn't work out for us, but we take the positive because we were able to fight for first place. »

Team WRT aims for Top 5

A slightly more nuanced speech for Vincent Vosse: the Team Principal of Team WRT admitted " a little disappointed " for not having been in the match for pole position, especially after the great promises displayed on Wednesday. “Our morale was high after setting the best time in qualifying, but we are now fully focused on the race. We are progressing steadily and hope to achieve good race results with both Hypercars. I'm an optimist, and although we know it will be difficult given the weather forecast, I think we can get into the top 5 with a flawless race. »

25 years after its victory in the general classification, the Munich brand is aiming for new success at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Very comfortable on the Sarthe circuit, the German horses could well play spoilsport against the favorites in the Hypercar category.
