A glimpse into the future of endurance. Toyota unveiled the GR LH2 Racing Concept, powered by liquid hydrogen (LH2 for "Liquid Hydrogen", H2 being the formula of the molecule) intended to develop hydrogen technology in motorsports. It is on display at the H2 Village of the Sarthe circuit, on the occasion of the 93rd edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2025 (June 11-15).
As part of the Japanese brand's goal to be carbon neutral, Toyota has been advancing its sustainable technologies in motorsport, notably in the Super Taikyu series in Japan, with a Corolla powered by hydrogen initially gas from 2021, before the introduction of a car powered by liquid hydrogen in 2023.
The potential of hydrogen engines in rally was highlighted in 2022 when the GR Yaris H2 completed demonstration runs in WRC at the Belgian Rally in Ypres. In 2023, the hydrogen-powered Corolla completed a demonstration lap at Le Mans, while a concept car, the GR H2 Racing Concept, was presented as a future hydrogen category at Le Mans is discussed.
