While it was mainly the BMWs and Acuras that showed up at the start of the race on the Daytona side, the two Porsche Penske Motorsport, the #6 and #7, took the lead in this 63rd edition nine hours before the checkered flag. In the final hour, once the race restarted after the yellow flag following the retirement of the #31 Cadillac, Mathieu Jaminet led the pack ahead of Tom Blomqvist's Acura and the second Porsche, that of Laurens Vanthoor. Blomqvist managed to put the pressure on, but once the tires were warmed up, Jaminet escaped, before Vanthoor took second position, Blomqvist being sent back to more than six seconds of the leading cars.
The pit stops did not change the situation, and Porsche continues to lead during the night. The first Cadillac, that of Ricky Taylor, is now in fourth place ahead of the first BMW. Only seven GTPs are still in the fight for victory, the others having experienced problems leading to retirement, like the Cadillac n°31, or lengthy repairs, like for the Acura n°93.
The fight rages in LMP2 between the n°8 of Sébastien Bourdais and the n°04 of Malthe Jakobsen, the Le Mans native managing for the moment to keep the lead of the event by a hair's breadth. Porsche also leads in GTD Pro, while it is the Mercedes #57 which is currently leading the GTD category.
