Sebastian, you almost got involved in the big accident that happened during the night. How close was it?
I was totally caught in it. I had a car on my left fender, a car on my right side. I didn't have time to slow down before contact because I was in the transmission of the Pratt Miller car and everything stopped. It was like Days of Thunder (the 1990 film about the Nascar with Tom Cruise. Ed.) When everything cleared in front of me, and the car still had four wheels and the steering wheel was straight, I thought, "Holy crap, this is a miracle." That's about all I know, because I didn't see it coming. I had no warning signs, all of a sudden the car stopped in front of me and I didn't have a chance. For more than one reason, we feel very, very lucky to be sitting here, because this could have ended up happening any number of times.
Where do you place this victory in your list of achievements?
I don’t know. To be honest with you, it’s like nobody wants to win it. The crash between (Mathias) Beche and Paul-Loup (Chatin) was just one of many incidents going on around us. It was a weird race. We had hope at times, and hope at others. I’m really happy that we were able to bring this result to John (Farano), who had been chasing this Rolex for a while. It’s a big financial commitment to put these LM P2 efforts together for privateers. I think people forget that a little too often. Really, John deserves credit for putting this effort together. We had a lot of fun, we can’t complain.
It’s hard to find a better way to start this collaboration…
The team did a great job. We certainly weren't the quickest car, but we stayed out of trouble. There was a lot of carnage around us. There was a lot of very, very aggressive driving, which ended in contact. I was quite surprised, to be honest. I'm not used to that in GTP. I don't think I've ever managed to pass anyone without getting hit. Credit to John for organising that and credit to my team-mates who did a really good job. It was a solid effort. We looked very strong overnight, then we lost a bit of speed when the conditions got trickier, which we were worried about.
