Helio Castroneves and Oliver Gavin made their respective employers shine during qualifying for the Daytona 250.

Acura and Corvette on pole at Daytona

Qualifications for the second round of theIMSA 2020, the WeatherTech 240 at Daytona, has just ended. It was the GTDs who took to the track first, and pole position went to la McLaren 720S GT3 n°76 from Compass Racing, led for the occasion by Corey Fergus, who shares the wheel with Paul Holton.

Thanks to a lap completed in 1'47"015, Fergus beat Aaron Telitz (Lexus RC F GT3 n°14 from AIM Vasser Sullivan) and Robby Foley (BMW M6 GT3 n°96 from Turner Motorsport) by a whisker.

In the GTLM category, the new Corvette C8.R shone on Florida soil since the latest addition to the Chevrolet brand took its first pole position. At the wheel of number 4, Oliver Gavin was the fastest in the class in 1'42"251. The American even signed the double thanks to Jordan Taylor, who conceded 0 to his stablemate. The top three is completed by the #272 BMW M8 GTE of Jesse Krohn.

Finally, the queens of the DPi category, as usual, closed the session. Confirming his good dispositions during free practice interviews, the No. 05 Acura ARX-7 quickly rose to the top of the hierarchy thanks to a time of 1'34"390 signed Helio Castroneves.

Despite repeated attacks from the two Mazda RT24-Ps n°77 (Oliver Jarvis) and n°55 (Jonathan Bomarito), the Brazilian held on until the end, to sign his first pole position of the season. Next in the top five are Juan Pablo Montoya (Acura no. 6) and Ryan Briscoe (Cadillac DPi-VR no. 10).

Gabby Chaves, who replaced Felipe Nasr in the No. 31 Cadillac DPi-VR, set the sixth fastest time ahead of Joao Barbosa (No. 5 Cadillac) and Chris Miller (No. 85 Cadillac).
