While the race seemed to be decided in favor of the Cadillacs, and mainly the #31, a caution ten minutes from the finish upset the final standings. When Earl Bamber had to make one last pit stop on the eve of the final lap, Tom Blomqvist, partnered with Colin Braun, took advantage to win the race, 1.8 seconds ahead of the #40 Cadillac driven by Louis Delétraz and Jordan Taylor.

The other Wayne Taylor Racing machine, the No. 10 of Filipe Albuquerque and Ricky Taylor, completed the podium, after a more than complicated day for the Porsche Penske. Mathieu Jaminet and Matt Campbell, however, managed to bring home the points for fourth place, a good omen for the title fight, while the No. 7 car did not see the finish following a dramatic exit from Nick Tandy with 1 hour and 20 minutes to go. It was during the subsequent caution period that the No. 60 Acura made one last pit stop, a winning strategy.

In LMP2, Paul di Resta, driving the No. 22 United Autosports Oreca, managed to resist the attacks of Dane Cameron to win by six tenths of a second ahead of the No. 99 AO Racing car. BMW won in GTD Pro thanks to the No. 48 Paul Miller Racing car, while in GTD, the No. 12 Lexus, which was expected to win, ran out of fuel on the last lap! Aston Martin therefore recovers an unexpected victory, with the n°27 of the Heart of Racing Team.

Several leading cars in LMP2 and GTD were eliminated in the opening minutes of the race, due to a massive downpour that occurred after half an hour. While the race began with a few drops of rain but with the entire field on slick tires, the switch to wet tires was forced by a sudden and rapid downpour, which completely flooded the track. Several cars, including the #11 TDS Racing car, suffered the consequences...

Romain Grosjean, at the wheel of the #63 Lamborghini he shares with Daniil Kvyat, was undoubtedly one of the stars of these 6 Hours of Watkins Glen. While the final result, a seventh place, was not particularly sensational, the Frenchman led the race during a gigantic first stint of 2h45, despite an outside temperature of over 30°C! The SC63 fell back into line thereafter, but between the first laps in the rain, then a perfectly executed strategy until the leadership of the race, the Italian brand will have made its mark.
