Author of pole position, the French simon pagenaud left it to his teammate and team manager Gil de Ferran to start the race. Starting at a high pace, the Brazilian quickly widened the gap to the tune of one second per lap depending on the traffic on Scott Sharp's Acura chasing him. Credited with a lead of more than thirty seconds, the leading Acura made its pit-stop on the 41st lap and De Ferran handed over to Pagenaud. Unfortunately, the race experienced its only neutralization three laps later. The opportunity for the rival Acura to take the opportunity to make its pit-stop and come out in the lead.

Later, the Frenchman suffered electrical problems which took away all hope of fighting for victory. The Acura from the De Ferran Motorsports team retired on the 67th of 93 laps, leaving that of the Highcroft team from Brabham/Sharp to slip towards its first victory of the season.

The Acura LMP2 of Fernandez-Diaz finished 2nd and won its category ahead of the two Lola-Mazdas from Team Dyson.

In GT2, it is firstly the Ferrari F430 of Pierre Kaffer who led the proceedings before suffering a suspension failure. Then Bill Auberlen's BMW before stalling after his pit-stop and the Porsche of Wolf Henzler before losing twelve laps to repair the damage caused by a puncture. In the end, it was the Flying Lizard Porsche of Jorg Bergmeister and Patrick Long which inherited the GT2 victory.
