BMW confirms reduced IMSA program

We revealed it last summer and, unfortunately, BMW has confirmed it. The German manufacturer is reducing its involvement in IMSA in the GTLM category. Thus, in 2021 BMW Team RLL will only participate in the four rounds of theEndurance Cup, namely the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 12 Hours of Sebring, the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen and Petit Le Mans.

Present since 2009 in the premier GT category within the North American championship, BMW follows the general movement of manufacturers, who gradually desert the class after the departure of Ford (2019) then Porsche in IMSA and Aston Martin en WEC.

The propeller firm will enter two BMW M8 GTEs in the hands of Connor De Philippi and Bruno Spengler in the No. 25, accompanied by Philipp Eng and Timo Glock at Daytona. John Edwards and Jesse Krohn will drive the No. 24 for the season, assisted by Marco Wittmann and Augusto Farfus at Daytona.

BMW remains on an excellent 2020 season since it won the 24 Hours of Daytona as well as the Road Atlanta round.

“Motorsport and in particular an IMSA program have been fundamental to our marketing efforts in North America,” said Victor Leleu, Director of BMW NA Motorsport. This year we will focus on the four races that make up the Michelin Endurance Cup. Of course, we would like to see all our BMW fans in every IMSA race, but this is the decision we have made in order to ensure a winning future,” concludes Victor Leleu.
