The 63rd edition of the 24 Hours of Daytona, the season-opening round of theIMSA, takes place this weekend. The start will be at 19:40 p.m. (French time) this Saturday.
Dries Vanthoor created a sensation on Thursday by taking pole position for the Florida classic at the wheel of the #8 BMW M Hybrid V24 he shares with Raffaele Marciello, Kevin Magnussen and Philipp Eng. This is the first pole position for the German prototype.
Four different manufacturers will start from the first four positions. The Acura ARX-06 n°93 (Ohta, Palou, Yelloly, van der Zande) will start in second position ahead of the Porsche #7 (L. Vanthoor, Tandy, Nasr) and Cadillac #31 (Bamber, Drugovich, Vesti, Aitken).
The #85 JDC Miller MotorSports customer Porsche (B. Aron, Wehrlein, Bruni, van der Helm) will start in fifth place ahead of the second Acura, the #60 (Rosenqvist, Dixon, Braun, Blomqvist). Next up will be the two Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillacs, with the #10 (Hartley, Stevens, Albuquerque, R. Taylor) ahead of the #40 (Kobayashi, Delétraz, J. Taylor).
Lamborghini n°63 (Mortara, Kvyat, Grosjean, Bortolotti) is ninth. The Porsche n°6 (Estre, Campbell, Jaminet) is only tenth on this starting grid, ahead of the n°5 of Proton Competition (Andlauer, Pino, Vautier, Jani). The other BMW, the n°25 (Rast, Frijns, S. van der Linde, Wittmann) brings up the rear of the GTPs after a problem during qualifying.
On the LM P2 side, it is the Oreca 07 n°52 of PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports which will start from first place in its category.
The Ford Mustang GT3s struck hard in GTD Pro by locking down the front row through Mike Rockenfeller and Frédéric Vervisch. Finally, in GTD, it was the #120 Porsche from Wright Motorsports that started from pole position.
