Ford launches new V6 in the United SportsCar Championship

Ford has developed a new 6l Ecoboost V3.5 to accommodate the merger of the Grand-Am and the ALMS. This engine will make its competitive debut during the 24 Hours of Daytona held on June 25 and 26, as well as the eleven other events on the calendar. “We are proud to bring a 6l twin-turbo direct injection Ecoboost V3.5 engine to the United SportsCar Championship in a competition dominated by V8s”, comments Jamie Allison, director of Ford Racing. “We want to showcase the capabilities of the Ford Ecoboost as a high-performance, fuel-efficient engine, on and off the track. »

Michael Shank Racing will have the privilege of discovering this new engine first by making a record attempt on October 9 at the World Center of Speed in Daytona. The team will try to beat the record set in 1987 by the 1988 champion of the Nascar Bill Elliott with an average of 210,364 mph (338,5 km/h) at the wheel of a Ford Thunderbird. “It’s a real privilege to have the chance to put our name in the record books”, comments Michael Shank. “It is almost inconceivable that a record has stood for this long. We have long worked to develop our relationship with Ford to be at the top of the list for projects like this. Every opportunity is good to be in the record books. »

The Ford V6 3.5l Ecoboost will undergo an endurance test on the bench at the Dearborn Laboratory in Michigan. Ford engineers worked with specialists Roush Yates Racing Engines to ensure the engine was fine-tuned.
