IMSA – Alonso confirmed for the 24h of Daytona

As we announced to you exclusively in issue 2135 of AUTOhebdo, Fernando Alonso will be present at the 24 Hours of Daytona (Florida) held on January 27 and 28. Through his links with Zak Brown, the director of McLaren Technology and co-owner of United Autosports, the double world champion will drive one of the two Ligier JS P217s entered by the vice-champion team of theELMS.

Fernando Alonso will line up alongside the reigning Asian LMP3 class champion Le Mans Series Phil Hanson and the reigning champion of the F3 European Championship Lando Norris. Paul di Resta will notably team up with Will Owen in the second LMP2.

“What an exciting and interesting project, comments Fernando Alonso. I will discover a new discipline, adapt to a totally different car which requires a different form of driving. This is an exciting new challenge for me. »

Fernando Alonso no longer hides his ambition to win the Triple Crown by winning the Monaco GP, the Indy 500 which he competed in this year and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“The 24 Hours of Daytona is the most famous American endurance race and one of the most beautiful events in the world. It's not part of the "Triple Crown", but like I've always said, my goal is to be a complete driver and this experience will be useful for another endurance race that I might compete in. »

“I had never driven on an oval before Indy but I now know what it is and how to progress on it, specifies the Asturian. I'm excited to come back to America. This race is also contested at the right time, the F1 being on rest in January. »
