IMSA – BMW presents the M6 GTLM Art Car by John Baldessari

Tradition anchored within BMW for many years, with collaborations with Andy Warhol or more recently Jeff Koons, the famous Art Car version 2016 was unveiled this Thursday in Miami, Florida.

Built on the basis of the M6 GTLM by the artist John Baldessari, the 19th Art Car will compete next January at the 24 Hours of Daytona in Florida, the opening event of theIMSA Sportscar Championship 2017.

“I have only done one job in my life previously involving a car, and it was a picture of a car, commented John Baldessari. So for the BMW Art Car project, I entered uncharted territory, not only in terms of subject matter, but also in moving from two to three dimensional art.

A challenge that I ultimately liked! The ideas all came at once: for example, the red dot on the roof, FAST on one side and a photo of the car on the other side. I like ambiguity, having 2D and 3D at the same time.

By considering the car as an icon of contemporary life, my concept turned out to be satirical, but it also highlights some of my favorite ideas. So you can say that the BMW Art Car is definitely a typical Baldessari and the fastest work of art I have ever created. »
