Things seemed to be going in the wrong direction for the Porsche n°6 of Nick Tandy and Mathieu Jaminet from the start of this eighth round of the year, the seventh where the prototypes in the GTP category were lined up. Indeed, contact with the No. 31 Cadillac on the first lap resulted in a drive-through, a forced passage through the pit lane without stopping at its box. It was therefore necessary from this moment to switch to a fuel saving strategy for the Porsche Penske Motorsport troops, and hope for a little help in terms of neutralizations.
This is exactly what happened since the event was neutralized six times during the 2h40 program. These multiple interventions by the safety car allowed Porsche to try the poker game, with a final stop for the No. 6 at 1h33 from the checkered flag, followed four laps later by the No. 7, which took advantage of a neutralization to refuel and maximize your chances of going to the end. Mathieu Jaminet, who took the wheel at that moment, knew that he had to be lucky, and also resist the return of Ricky Taylor's No. 10 Acura at the end of the race, to win.
And four for Porsche!
« It was pure racing IMSA ! That's what we love, that's why we love coming back here every time. You can be nowhere the day before, and nowhere at the start of the race, and two hours later you come back with a nice trophy! A big thank you to the team for developing the strategy, for making the right calculations. »
With this victory, the second of the season for the Tandy/Jaminet duo after Laguna Seca, the No. 6 returns to second place in the championship, 100 points behind the No. 7, which has also won twice this season. . With four victories in seven races, the 2024 IMSA season is undeniably marked with the seal of the German brand!
