Penske and Corvette triumph at Road America

Dominant in free practice and qualifying, the Acuras confirmed their good performances in the race. At least number 7 shared by Helio Castroneves and Ricky Taylor, the sister car being immediately delayed by a left rear puncture following contact with the #55 Mazda.

But the ARX-05 of the Brazilian and his American friend did not win as easily as expected. She first had to deal with two RT24-Ps that were still performing just as well on this track, without forgetting the No. 10 Cadillac DPi-VR from Wayne Taylor Racing, which was surprisingly fast this afternoon.

But above all, with a little less than an hour to go, a deluge hit the circuit. While leading the GTLM, Earl Bamber (Porsche 911 RSR-19 n°912) made a mistake, as did – in particular – Simon Trummer Cassels (Oreca 07 n°52), who dominated the LM P2, Alvaro Parente (Acura NSX GT3 n°57) and Pipo Derani (Cadillac DPi-VR n°31), who will manage to bring his mount back to his stand.

After a few minutes, the race management finally decided to bring out the red flag. All cars were returned to the pit lane, with no touching allowed. Finally, the competitors will be restarted with the countdown showing just over 20 minutes remaining. After the refueling and pass-arounds were completed, Oliver Jarvis (Mazda RT24-P n°55) was able to restart the race... before falling in the rankings because he was still wearing slicks!

Renger van der Zande (Cadillac DPi-VR n°10) didn't ask for that much, but the Dutchman won't be able to resist Helio Castroneves for long. The three-time Indy 500 winner and his sidekick Ricky Taylor secured their second victory with Acura Team Penske, the first since May 2018!

On the second step of the podium, we find Van der Zande-Briscoe, who finally resisted another DPi-VR, the n°31 of Felipe Nasr-Pipo Derani, ultimately not penalized by the last city's exit from the road.

The Sébastien pair Bourdais-Joao Barbosa (Cadillac DPi-VR n°5) has nothing to be ashamed of for his performance since he finished just off the podium in front of the two Mazdas.

In GTLM, Porsche has one series of disappointments. After the two cars clashed in the previous round, the German manufacturer saw Bamber finish on the tires and Nick Tandy clash with the No. 8 BMW M24 GTE of Jonathan Edwards as the two men battled for the lead. third place.

Corvette therefore offers itself a third double in a row, the No. 8 C3.R of Antonio Garcia-Jordan Taylor ahead of the No. 4 of Tommy Milner-Oliver Gavin.

Finally, DragonSpeed and its duo Ben Hanley-Henrik Hedman (Oreca 07 no. 81) took the lead in LM P2, while in GTD, Lexus and AIM Vasser Sullivan scored a third consecutive victory thanks to the RC-F GT3 no. 12 by Townsend Bell-Frankie Montecalvo.

The next round of theIMSA is scheduled for August 23 at Virginia International Speedway. A race reserved for the GTLM and GTD categories.
