The 100-minute qualifying race for the 24 Hours of Daytona took place this Sunday, January 23 at the International Speedway. In Florida, Tristan Vautier placed the JDC-Miller Motorsports Cadillac DPi on pole position ahead of Filipe Albuquerque for Wayne Taylor Racing. The race started badly for the Portuguese, quickly relegated to fifth position. The first moments of this 1h40 of roaring were more complicated than expected for the team which had dominated three of the four Free Practice sessions. While they had been overtaken by the Acuras during these sessions, the Cadillacs quickly monopolized the first three places in the event. Only 10th in qualifying following his exit from the track causing a red flag, Renger van der Zande erased his mistake from the start by overtaking his opponents on the outside to climb to second place behind Tristan Vautier, still leader.

The pit stops then began, the strategies shifted and everyone tried to manage the traffic between the GT3s and the LM P3s as best they could. The Acuras did the best and the #10 of Wayne Taylor Racing, driven by an inspired Filipe Albuquerque among the laggards, found itself in first position 32 minutes from the goal. Richard Westbrook kept up the pressure until the final laps, but the Briton spun in an overly optimistic maneuver. The #5 JDC-Miller Motorsport car nevertheless retained second place behind Wayne Taylor Racing. Kamui Kobayashi crossed the line in third position with the No. 48 Action Express Racing Cadillac DPi.

In other categories

In LM P2, Mikkel Jensen allowed the No. 52 PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports Oreca to gain an advantage over its sister car, which started in pole position, by posting the fastest laps mid-race. Andretti Autosports got the best of the other LM P3s.

In the GT3, it is the #63 Lamborghini Huracán from TR3 Racing which will start in first position in the 24 Hours. There Mercedes-AMG nº57 from Winward Racing will do the same in GTD.
