WTSC – DPi will appear in 2017

The guidelines for the future flagship category of WeatherTech Sportscar Championship in 2017 were unveiled today on the sidelines of the Petit final Le Mans at Road Atlanta (Georgia), by the International Motor Sports Association.

First, the current name of the Daytona Prototypes of the United Sportscar Championship will be replaced by the name Daytona Prototypes International (DPi). Four manufacturers have already been selected to supply the chassis: Onroak, Oreca, Dallara and Riley/Multimatic. The DPi and LM P2s will be able to compete in the premier Prototype class.

As previously announced during the summer, if the LM P2 racing in an ACO or FIA championship will be powered by a unique block developed by Gibson Technology, several engines may be used on the other side of the Atlantic, including those used by cars meeting FIA GT3 regulations.

The homologation of DPi and LM P2 cars will last four years (until 2020), and a Balance of Performance will logically be established. Closed LM P2 cars built between 2014 and 2016 will be able to race in 2017 in the WeatherTech Sportscar Championship, while open LM P2s and current DPs will no longer be admitted after 2016.
