Alessandro Zanardi made headlines last year by winning two gold medals at the London Olympic Games in handcycling. Having had his legs amputated following a terrible CART accident at the Lausitzring, the Italian stunned the world of motorsport with his combativeness by returning to competition through the WTCC where he remained for five years. After his London exploits, BMW offered the former driver Williams a test session behind the wheel of the M3 DTM which dominated the German discipline last year for the return of the Bavarian manufacturer. But Alessandro Zanardi ultimately avoided the prospect of a full-time return to a team.
However, the Italian's love for motor racing is still strong and he would love to compete in an international event like those organized in the USA. “The simplest option (until the next Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro) would be to get back behind the wheel”, he admitted to Gazzetta dello Sport. “I have had offers to race in high-ranking disciplines like DTM or WTCC but I do not want to compete in a full season. Conversely, a unique test to be well prepared could represent the perfect challenge. The Indy 500? Yes, but the 24 Hours of Daytona, in a team of friends, would also be fun. However, I will not give up handcycling which is a real passion. »
