The ACO announces green fuel supplied by TotalEnergies from 2022

“Motor sport has always had a special place in pushing us towards innovation. We have to invest.” Here is how TotalEnergie began the press conference at the end of the morning. If the ACO took the opportunity to unveil the calendar for the 2022 WEC season, TotalEnergie for its part discussed for a long time, the fuel planned for 2022. After 18 months of research and development, TotalEnergies will in fact provide a fuel of 100% renewable origin without the slightest drop of oil. Titled Excellium Racing 100, the fuel will thus have compounds from biomass, without putting pressure on agriculture. This will, among other things, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60% over the life cycle of the fuel.

“We will transform this biomass into bioethanol and ultimately transform it into biofuel”, specifies TotalEnergie. It is a fuel that meets international gasoline standards. For now, the priority is for WEC but we will be able to find them in other competitions. The revolution is truly underway. » declared Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies.

Note that the ACO is also working on other means of providing energy to prototypes such as electricity or hydrogen.
After discussions with the various teams, the ACO also announced that the new LMP2 regulations would only be introduced from 2024. It therefore sees a logical continuation with the introduction of the LMDH in 2023.

In any case, theEndurance clearly takes the Formula 1 speed on the subject of neutral fuel. The premier category of motorsport is discussing green fuel for 2025, 3 years late.
“Hopefully the authorities will find a compromise. We must change to move towards 'zero emissions'. I hope it happens sooner than expected. I also hope that they will find solutions and that this will allow more manufacturers to get into our sport. » declared a few months ago Günther Steiner, the director of Haas F1.
