The Covid-19 pandemic remains a complicating factor for the organization and logistics around major sporting competitions and the WEC will pay the price again this year.
The Automobile Club de l'Ouest confirmed this Wednesday the cancellation of the 6 Hours of Fuji, scheduled for September 26, in the face of entry restrictions into Japanese territory.
To digitally replace this round, the ACO and the FIA will add a second race in Bahrain at the end of the year, the Sakhir circuit hosting a “double header” on October 30 and November 6.
“The still unstable situation requires us to be particularly flexible in our organization, indicates Pierre Fillon, president of the ACO. After consultation with all stakeholders and in view of the health situation, we made the decision not to go to Fuji.
A second round will be organized in Bahrain, in order to maintain the initial format of the championship. I would like to sincerely thank our Japanese counterparts, who are particularly mobilized to try to maintain this event. We will see them again with great pleasure in 2022.”
The organization of such a double race remains unprecedented in the history of the World Championship.Endurance, the next round of which will take place in a little over a week in Monza in Italy, before the meeting of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (August 21-22).
