With ORECA's near-total monopoly on the LMP2 category for several seasons, it's easy to forget that the regulations are actually open to several manufacturers. Ligier, Dallara, and Multimatic are theoretically still eligible, but in reality, the ORECA 07 has crushed the competition to the point of becoming the undisputed benchmark in the discipline. And this trend doesn't seem likely to reverse anytime soon.
The latest example: United Autosports has officially announced its commitment to the future ORECA 09, homologated for the 2028-2032 LMP2 regulations. The British team of Richard Dean and Zak Brown is thus extending a collaboration that began in 2019, a period during which it racked up successes with the French manufacturer: two class victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, an FIA title WEC LMP2, a championship ELMS, not forgetting prestigious successes in IMSA at Daytona and Sebring.
The ORECA quality label
This announcement primarily confirms a well-established reality in the paddock: when it comes to aiming for victory in LMP2, choosing ORECA now seems like the obvious choice. Reliability, performance, customer support, accumulated experience… the Signes-based manufacturer has built an ecosystem that has become virtually indispensable.
The future LMP2 regulations, expected for 2027, raise hopes for a more diverse field. Several stakeholders want to see more balanced competition emerge to avoid a disguised single-manufacturer category. But for now, it's difficult to imagine a real shift in the hierarchy.
By already securing its future car for the next generation of prototypes, United Autosports is sending a clear message: despite upcoming regulatory changes, ORECA remains the benchmark in LMP2. And as long as the results continue to speak for themselves, few teams will be tempted to look elsewhere.
