VIDEO – The controversial collision between Porsche #92 and Ferrari #51

Drama in Bahrain. Fifteen minutes from the end of the race, while Ferrari et Porsche were in the fight for the final victory and for the title in GTE Pro, Alessandro Pier Guidi, then attacking the #92 Porsche of the Estre-Jani-Christensen duo, was surprised when braking by pushing and sending the Porsche who was leading the race in a spin, regaining control of the race following this incident.

The crew of Ferrari #51 was logically ordered by the race direction to return the position. Alessandro Pier Guidi was about to comply, slowing down drastically on the start-finish straight, except that the Porsche plunged into the pits to make its last express refueling, creating some confusion.

As a result, victory went to the #51 Ferrari of James Calado and Pier Guidi in GTE Pro, who thereby took the category crown in the championship. Even if it was not apparent to everyone on the live feed, the Porsche's pit stop canceled the instruction that the Ferrari had to let the #92 crew pass. Porsche obviously filed a protest against the #51 Ferrari, not against the collision itself, but against the fact that the race management did not correctly report the incident to the stewards, giving it: even the instruction to the Ferrari to let the Porsche pass.

But the protest was rejected and it was the Calado-Pier Guidi crew that won the 8 Hours of Bahrain and won the 2021 world title in LMGTE-Pro, ahead of the Porsche trio Christensen, Jani and the Frenchman Estre. Crew #51 has won as many races (3) in WEC than crew #92, but the victory in 24 hours of Le Mans of the Ferrari made the difference from an accounting point of view.
