Here we are, we can finally say it, Ferrari won a race in WEC outside of 24 Hours of Le Mans since its return in 2023. There was certainly the victory of the 499P N°83 of AF Corse in Austin last year but this is technically considered private.

The 1812 km of Qatar were therefore the scene of a first victory for a red Ferrari since 1973. More than half a century. This is to be put to the credit of the trio of the N°50 Nicklas Nielsen-Antonio Fuoco-Miguel Molina.

In addition to ending a drought of more than 50 years, this victory was historic for the Prancing Horse since it scored a hat-trick while the No. 83 (Kubica-Hanson-Ye) and the second official No. 51 (Giovinazzi-Calado-Pier Guidi) completed the podium. In the Hypercar era, this is the first hat-trick for an LMH and the fifth in the FIA WEC.

Before Ferrari, 4 triples had taken place during a round of the world championship.Endurance. Surprisingly, the last one before the Italians was relatively recent. It was on this same Losail circuit that it took place. In 2024, when Porsche had triumphed with the 963 N°6 of Kévin Estre, André Lotterer and Laurens Vanthoor ahead of the N°12 of Jota (Ilott-Nato-Stevens) and the second official N°5 (Campbell-Christensen-Makowiecki).

On the other hand, to find traces of other triples before those of Ferrari and Porsche in Hypercar, we have to go back more than 10 years, almost to the beginnings of the FIA WEC, officially launched in 2012. Two of them were also achieved during the first season in the history of the championship and even consecutively!

The first in history took place at the 6 Hours of Spa where Audi did not settle for a hat-trick but a quadruple with its R18s. Romain Dumas, Loïc duval and Marc Gené on the No. 3 were the main protagonists ahead of the No. 1 (Lotterer-Fassler-Tréluyer), the No. 4 (Jarvis-Bonanomi) and the No. 2 (McNish-Christensen-Capello). A month later at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the firm with the rings did it again this time with the No. 1 ahead of the No. 2 and the No. 4.

A year later, once again at Spa-Francorchamps, Audi returned with the same intentions and left with a new hat-trick from the hands of Benoït Tréluyer, André Lotterer and Marcel Fässler ahead of the No. 2 and No. 3.

The young journalist omits the triple of the FORD MK II in 1966 and many others of Ferrari from the time when it was the world endurance championship, the exact French translation of WEC.

These victories counted towards the FIA World Sportscar Championship, not the FIA World Endurance Championship, which was created in 2012. This date is also mentioned in the article.
