The FIA modifies the Le Mans Hypercar regulations

The FIA has approved several changes to the technical regulations for the future category Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) which must act as the premier category of the WEC from 2021.

The Federation points out that the modifications relate to power, weight and control of aerodynamic performance. The power was lowered to 500kW against 585kW initially planned. The weight will also be reduced from 1100 to 1030kg.

These modifications must reduce the cost of cars, whether in terms of development or operation, and achieve convergence with the LMDh of which technical details were recently revealed. The FIA thus confirms that the LMDh will be admissible in the WEC since the minimum weight, maximum power and aero performance will be identical for the two categories.

“We must take into account the changing economic environment and adopt cost reduction measures to support the efforts of manufacturers, notes Richard Mille, the president of the Commission Endurance of the FIA. With the presentation by the ACO/IMSA of the founding principles of the LMDh platform and the decision of the FIA Endurance Commission to modify the technical specifications of the Le Mans Hypercar category, we are finally beginning convergence. »

“The fact that both platforms are eligible in the future premier category of the FIA World Endurance Championship will allow a greater diversity of technical approaches and thus attract more competitors. This is a goal towards which all parties concerned – including the manufacturers entered in the Le Mans Hypercar category, the FIA and the ACO – have been working since the beginning. This is an important step for the future of endurance racing”, he added.

“The future of Endurance is actively being built. The ACO – IMSA convergence, allowing competitors in the premier category to be able to race in the FIA World Endurance Championship and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship is now concrete and complete, assured Pierre Fillon, president of the ACO. Indeed, LMDh (Le Mans Daytona “h”) and Le Mans Hypercar are now governed by convergent regulations for similar performances. The technical teams of the FIA and the ACO worked on an adaptation of the LMH regulations, which was received positively by the manufacturers. This announcement is further proof of this constructive collaboration, crucial for our discipline. »
