Lamborghini explains its withdrawal from the World Endurance Championship

The rumor had been growing in recent months, since the first echoes heard in the paddock of the 6 Hours of Fuji in September. It is now official, Lamborghini is absent from the list of entries for the World Championship for the 2025 season, both in the Hypercar category and in GT3. Following this official announcement, the Italian manufacturer communicated on this decision. As already written by AUTOhebdo previously, the main reason for this withdrawal lies in the change of the sporting regulations of the WEC with the obligation for each manufacturer in the Hypercar category to enter two prototypes next season.

« Competing at the highest level is an honour for Lamborghini Squadra Corse and remains an ambition for the years to come. The change in the FIA WEC sporting regulations, which now also oblige brands to field two cars in the Hypercar category from 2025, also changes Lamborghini's entry conditions in the championship this year and is no longer aligned with the company's strategy. ", indicates the transalpine manufacturer. Even if the latter never mentions the financial side, it seems paradoxical that with a turnover up 20% over the first nine months of the year (2,43 billion euros) and a full order book until 2026, it does not have the financial strength to carry out such a program.

Lamborghini has chosen to focus on IMSA

This does not, however, mean the end of the LMDh program of the firm with the Bull: " Lamborghini has therefore evaluated its options and has chosen not to participate in the 2025 FIA WEC while remaining committed to the development of the SC63 by continuing the championship. IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar in the United States. » The SC63 was also the fastest during the pre-season tests for the 24 Hours of Daytona in the hands of Romain Grosjean. This entry in the North American Championship ofEndurance should not allow Lamborghini to participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2025 (June 14-15), due to lack of presence in the World Championship.

Lamborghini also mentions " a break in the FIA WEC program ", which implies the possibility of returning to the championship in the future, even if no date has been mentioned to go in this direction. This could be an intention for 2026, the year in which the brand's future GT3, the Temerario, will make its competitive debut. With this interruption in its program, Lamborghini intends to "cfocus its efforts on the development of the new Temerario GT3 throughout 2025. »

But won't it be too late to hope for a return to the grid in 2026? Mercedes has already stepped into the breach with the registration of two GT3s for next season, and it is likely that this arrival is only the beginning of an even bigger project on the side of the firm with the star. Aston Martin will also make its Hypercar debut in 2025 while Genesis is expected, still in this category, the following year. With McLaren who would be in the running for 2027, there would be little room left for a potential return in the near future.
