Le Mans – Ford back with a GT in 2016?

According to Autoweek, Ford would consider making its return to 24 Hours of Le Mans from 2016. The manufacturer with the blue oval would present a “GT” next January 12 during the North American International Auto Show held in Detroit (Michigan).

The sporting program would however not be revealed for several months but would confirm an entry of two cars in the double round of the Sarthe race as well as in USC, with support from Chip Ganassi Racing already entered in the American Championship next year with a Riley-Ford with Scott Pruett and Joey Hand which replaces Memo Red.

The racing car would be built by Multimatic Motorsports, a Canadian structure that has worked with Ford for more than 20 years. The twin-turbo Ecoboost V6 could well be retained even if the V8 should not be ruled out.

If this return is confirmed, Ford would carry out a superb marketing stunt to celebrate 50 years since the first victory at Le Mans of a GT40. This model won four consecutive victories in Sarthe (Pays-de-la-Loire) between 1966 and 1969. The new GT would not, however, take the lines of the legendary mount.
