Le Mans – Everything about the 2020 “Hypercar” regulations

In its issue 2187 (available since this morning on newsstands as well ashere in digital version), AUTOhebdo tells you everything about the future regulations to govern the premier category of theEndurance from the 2020-2021 season WEC. To whet your appetite, here are a few things:

- Style : Hypercar with brand affiliation.

- Budget for a season with 2 cars: 20 million for a manufacturer / 16 for a private team

– Establishment of a performance window.

- Hybrid system : SREC connected to the front axle (200 kw or 270 hp); obligation to make it available for rental (2 million euros for 2 cars per season). Limited number per season under penalty of penalty. The ECU (electronic system controlling the hybrid system) will be standardized.

– Efficiency aerodynamic (drag and downforce) capped and measured.

- Thermal motor : Power (520 kW, or approximately 700 hp), weight, center of gravity and BSFC (specific energy consumption) controlled with easy-to-achieve targets. Limited number per season under penalty of penalty.

- Approval : Over 5 years, with the possibility for manufacturers to approve a new model over this period if they wish to change the model to be promoted.

- Evolutions during the off-season: Very limited, they must only concern reliability, safety, style or be intended to make up for a clear performance deficit.

- trials : 3 collective sessions of two days (with probably the possibility of doing two Endurance tests) + 4 free days. Teams will not have access to cars between overseas rounds.

- Commitment : Obligation for a manufacturer to field at least two cars.

- Tires : Single manufacturer. Same erasers for everyone.

- Refueling : Possibility of having a single refueling space on off-road racesLe Mans, so as to halve the material allocated to refueling, etc.

- Personal limited (we are talking about 40 people for two cars).

Clearly, if we believe these figures, an envelope of 20 million euros will be enough for victory overall, in the WEC as well as at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Although still giving pride of place to hybrid technology, the powertrain will be much less expensive than currently, with BSFC criteria achievable much more easily than today.
