The World Championship calendarEndurance 2023 should be revealed at the end of the week, but it is now certain that it will include seven events. To the six stops in 2022 should add a stage in Portimão, the Portuguese circuit having already hosted the WEC Last year.

For 2024, the championship would like an eighth race. A return to Silverstone could be considered for this. “We are in discussions with Silverstone, explains Frédéric Lequien, Managing Director of LMEM on the sidelines of the 4 Hours of Spa, fifth and penultimate round of the European season Le Mans Series. Our last exchanges with them date back to July and we plan to visit the circuit very soon. We'll see, but we're in touch. » The British track could, however, inherit a round ELMS since other countries are in the running for the WEC.

Saudi Arabia in 2024?

Another possible destination, Saudi Arabia. The country has already expressed its wish to host the championship in the future. “The WEC aims to go everywhere, replied Frédéric Lequien when we asked him about this possible destination in the future. With all the manufacturers joining the championship, many countries would like to host races. Interest around the WEC is growing enormously every day and some countries have shown interest. »

Indeed, the Qiddiya sports complex will house a permanent circuit which will notably host F1 and the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix which has been taking place since 2020 on the Jeddah Corniche and its route at insane speeds. In addition to the Formula 1, the promoters of this future circuit wish to attract WEC potentially bringing to 2 the number of rounds of the world championshipEndurance in the Middle East after Bahrain. For Sakhir, the contract is signed until 2027. Dorna and Saudi Arabia have already signed a memorandum of understanding for a future Grand Prix of Moto GP on this circuit of Qiddiya.

Rather than Saudi Arabia and its stumbling but bloody MBS dollars, why not a return to Kyalami, South Africa being a land of motorsport which also experienced the heyday of endurance with Nine Hours of Kyalami in the 70s and 80s?
