Current LM P1s could remain in 2020

The ACO could decide to keep the current LM P1s when the future regulations are put in place in 2020. Pierre Fillon, the president of the ACO, raised this idea during the press conference held this morning on the circuit. 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“The future regulation focuses on three essential points: cost reduction, a retained but simplified hybrid system and a look oriented towards hypercars, confirmed Pierre Fillon. We have received positive feedback from the media. This is promising for both the public and manufacturers. There will perhaps still be current LM P1s in the first years. We will consult the fans to find the name of this category although the decision will be up to us. »

The 2020 season of WEC will notably offer hybrid systems limited to 5 MJ compared to 8 currently for Toyota TS050 Hybrid, mainly in order to limit costs.

“We will have a lot of work to put this in place, recognized Richard Mille, the president of the Commission Endurance. It was necessary to limit costs, especially since we have the tools to do so. There is a rather astonishing paradox in motorsport: manufacturers can invest very large sums to gain a few tenths while a loss of weight can save several seconds. The objective is that a manufacturer investing, for example, ten million more than the others does not have an advantage. »

The FIA will also seek to involve women more in Endurance, a discipline which would be perfect for getting closer to an egalitarian status which is still hypothetical for the moment.

“Motor sport is masculine. Our organization is also, recognized Jean Todt. The place of women must be equal to that of men. We see that countries like Saudi Arabia have made efforts in this direction by allowing women to drive. Endurance is a perfect platform to welcome more women into competition. »
