Successful operation for Guillaume Moreau

The last time we met him was last June, during the 24 Hours of Le Mans. All smiles and always with his unfailing sense of humor, he wanted to be there to encourage OAK Racing. Guillaume Moreau then returned to this circuit on which he had suffered an accident a year earlier (on June 3, 2012 to be exact) during the test day of the Sarthe double clock tower. Accident following which he was diagnosed with a partial but serious rupture of the spinal cord due to a fracture of the 12th vertebra.

Since June, the native of Limoges has continued to work hard. Recently, he returned to the Angers University Hospital Center to see Doctor Lucas, who had welcomed him after his accident, for a new procedure. The material used to hold the vertebrae during the consolidation phase was removed. “The evolution of the consolidation of the fracture has been completely positive, underlines Doctor Lucas. The control scan carried out one year after the first intervention made it possible to safely consider the removal of the material which held the formerly fractured vertebra in place. The results of the intervention were entirely favorable, despite significant pain linked to Guillaume's musculature and status as a high-level athlete. The x-rays taken after the operation show that there was no movement linked to the removal of the equipment and therefore Guillaume will quickly be able to resume his conditioning as a high-level athlete, after a check-up that I will carry out in six weeks. I will continue to follow Guillaume and the evolution of his recovery on the nervous level. »

This procedure concludes the bone healing phase. Concerning the damage to the spinal cord, the regrowth of nerve endings can continue for almost two more years, we will have to wait until then to draw a definitive conclusion. ?The operation went very well, Guillaume is satisfied. I had to move the muscles to reach the equipment, and since I have gained a lot of muscle over the past year, which has allowed me to do a lot of things, waking up was more painful than expected. I am relieved, given the seriousness of my accident, to have recovered well bone-wise. On the nervous level, I know that it will still take a long time for the nerve endings to grow back but this last operation is nevertheless a big weight less. This is a page that will be able to be turned. I thank the Angers University Hospital, the entire department of Doctor Lucas, the physiotherapists and the nurses for their precious help, with a special thought for the doctor himself. And I hope to come back to see them as infrequently as possible! »

But Guillaume Moreau has no time to be bored. Alongside his intense rehabilitation program, he created, with his insurer Franck Bayle, Racecare insurance, a brokerage firm specializing in sport and more particularly motorsport. Furthermore, it was chosen by the ICM? Brain and Spinal Cord Institute? as ambassador of the local branch in Limousin: he hopes to help them raise funds. The Habs have a busy schedule, and will therefore have plenty to do during the rest period necessary for healing following the operation undergone in Angers. Training and physical preparation will resume in January.
