Porsche presents the 919 Hybrid for the 2017 season

After Toyota, it is the turn of Porsche to unveil its new LMP1 for the 2017 season WEC. The new 919 Hybrid was presented on the eve of the start of the Prologue contested this weekend in Monza (Italy).

Following “Dieselgate”, Porsche will only line up two examples of the 919 Hybrid at the 24 Hours of Le Mans June 17 and 18. No. 1 will be entrusted to Neel Jani, Nick Tandy and André Lotterer, while No. 2 will be driven by Brendon Hartley, Timo Bernhard and Earl Bamber.

The Porsche 919 Hybrid has clearly evolved, notably with a much greater overhang at the front. The headlights have been redesigned to take up much more space and the nose is more streamlined than in the past.

“For the 2017 season, 60 to 70% of the car was modified, commented Andreas Seidl, Team Principal of the Porsche team. The monocoque remains unchanged from 2016, but we have optimized the elements to be as efficient as possible. Limiting two aero packages for the season is a good idea to keep costs down. We reworked the front end to reduce as much as possible the rubber balls picked up, which impacted the balance of the car. »

“We have lost some aero with the new regulations and we expect to have a gap of 3 to 4s at Le Mans. Our goal was to make sure we didn’t gain any weight compared to the previous version”, added Andreas Seidl.
