After the season opener in Imola in early April, the World Championship ofEndurance (WECThe Ford Mustang GT3 sets up shop in the Belgian Ardennes for the second race of the year. The Spa-Francorchamps circuit, with its 7,004 kilometers and iconic corners—Eau Rouge, Raidillon, Blanchimont—presents a radically different challenge from the Italian track. For the Ford Mustang GT3, this event is both an opportunity to bounce back after Imola (10th for the #77 and 16th for the #88) and a dress rehearsal for the upcoming season. 24 Hours of Le Mans, scheduled from June 10 to 14.

"Every lap is a thrill."

For the Ford drivers, the enthusiasm at the prospect of returning to Spa is unanimous, and several of them already have solid track records there. Stefano Gattuso (No. 88), who boasts six races on this circuit, is particularly enthusiastic: “It’s one of the most beautiful circuits in the world, with incredibly fast and flowing corners that make it a joy to drive. I have great memories there, including a few podium finishes. Last year we were fighting for the win, so I’m coming back very motivated and confident. The car has improved with the EVO package, and I’m working very well with my teammates.” Sebastian Priaulx (No. 77), who can boast a WEC victory at Spa in 2022 (in LMGTE Am with the Porsche (911 RSR-19 of Dempsey Proton Racing), shares this enthusiasm: "It's easily one of the top five circuits in the world. Every lap is a thrill, with high-speed, high-commitment sections that really test you."

While enthusiasm is high, the pilots are keeping in mind the lessons learned from the first round. Logan sargeant (No. 88) is direct: “I’m excited to build on the foundations we laid at Imola. We know what we need to improve, and we’ll put that into action at Spa. We’re also using these six hours as key preparation for Le Mans — Spa will be crucial to ensure we execute everything perfectly: clean driving, no penalties, and maximizing every opportunity.” Ben Tuck (No. 77), who scored a point in the championship in Italy (10th) after a close battle for ninth place, has higher ambitions: "We were wheel to wheel for ninth position, and eighth was just ahead. We know that with a little more work, we can fight for a podium finish."

A Mustang in progress

The technical discourse is consistent from one driver to another: the EVO package introduced on their car seems to be paying off. Giammarco Levorato (No. 88) is convinced of this: “The Ford Mustang GT3 has shown real improvements this season, so the motivation is very high. Together with Proton Competition, Ford Racing and Multimatic, we are working hard, and my teammates and I are ready to give our best to achieve the result we deserve.” For Sebastian Priaulx, the Belgian track should suit him even better car American than the Italian test: “Imola was a bit more difficult for us, but I think Spa suits the car better. I’m optimistic about our ability to be competitive and fight for podium finishes.”

Of the six drivers entered, Eric Powell (No. 77) is a newcomer to the series. The Imola race was his first in the championship, and he doesn't hide the learning curve he's going through: “This first weekend has been a huge learning experience for me in many ways. I now have a better understanding of racing culture and tires, and we completed a test day at Spa, so I feel much better prepared. I think Spa also suits my driving style better — the circuit is very flowing, and the Mustang feels really good there.” It remains to be seen whether all the Ford drivers will be able to translate this optimism into concrete results before heading to Le Mans for the big event of the season.
