Towards sexier qualifications

By unveiling the 2020-2021 calendar of WEC, Gérard Neveu had insisted on his desire to see more races take place on Saturday. Thus, during the upcoming campaign, only the 6 Hours of Monza and Fuji will be held on a Sunday.

“This allows us to use the night, which is one of the characteristics of our discipline, the director of the WEC explained to us. And we can offer activities within the circuit in the evening. We also take care to avoid clashes on TV with major motorsport events as much as possible.

The Italian Grand Prix F1 is held for example on the same weekend as the 6 Hours of Silverstone, which is why we have swapped the WEC andELMS. At Sebring, we will race on Friday, but that has no impact, because the vast majority of fans arrive on Thursday and leave on Sunday morning. »

But the WEC governing bodies would not be against a change in the qualifying format.. As a reminder, the time used is the average of the best times of two of the drivers in the crew.

“I find it complicated to follow, rightly underlines Gérard Neveu. We will consult the actors to find out what they think, but I think it needs to be more spectacular.

But if we change, we will have to make sure that the cars do not just do a single rolling lap, which is why we reviewed the format a few years ago (in 2013. Editor's note), because we found it totally disrespectful for fans having paid their entry ticket. »

And organize them the morning of the race? “We thought about it, but some rightly told us that the drivers were not going to dare to attack for fear of damaging their cars before the race. » The ideas box is open.
