On the occasion of the 8 Hours of Bahrain, the helmets of the drivers of the Toyota Gazoo Racing, Sébastien Buemi et Brendon Hartley, were equipped with a brand new on-board camera for the Free Practice sessions last weekend. This new technology is “positioned at eye level, on the protective padding inside the driver's helmet, a micro camera (10 mm in diameter and weighing only 2,5 grams) gives the public the feeling of being behind the wheel by transmitting live images of what the driver sees directly on the television screens », it is explained in the FIA press release. This technology had already been presented in Formula 1 as part of the Belgian Grand Prix with Fernando Alonso.

“Technical innovation has always been an integral part of the World ChampionshipEndurance of the FIA and the fact that certain developments are present not only on the track but also in the field of broadcasting is excellent news for the championship, explains Richard Mille, President of the FIA Endurance Commission. I can't say enough about the work done by the makers of the Driver's Eye camera, who have produced a very compact device, and the FIA Safety Department for overseeing the necessary homologation process. THE WEC is the first FIA series where fans get the chance to experience Driver's Eye camera footage in closed cockpit cars. »
