In 1991, on the weekend of August 23 to 25, Michael Schumacher took the first steps of his career in Formula 1 on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit behind the wheel of the Jordan. 30 years later, another Schumacher is preparing to experience his first race on the Ardennes slide in the premier category of motorsport. A legendary place, an emblematic name and a symbolic moment. This is how to summarize the weekend that we are about to experience Mick Schumacher.
Those who have already gone to see a Formula 1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps know: there are dozens of merchandising stands reserved for Michael Schumacher on the way to the circuit. Proof of the attachment between a legendary driver and a route that is just as legendary. This Friday, when Mick Schumacher puts his wheels on the Ardennes slide, he will experience an unforgettable moment. 30 years after his father, the pilot Haas will cover the 7,004 km at the wheel of a Formula 1. Unlike Red Baron, Mick Schumacher will not discover the car when hitting the Belgian track. Because normally, the “Kaiser” was not supposed to participate in the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix. It was a combination of circumstances that led the German driver to climb behind the wheel of the Jordan. Bertrand Gachot, then a regular pilot, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for having sprayed cayenne pepper in the face of a London taxi driver. Eddie Jordan was then looking for a driver for the next race in Belgium. It was then that Willi Weber, a businessman, whispered the name of Michael Schumacher into Eddie Jordan's ear. This is how the legend of the Red Baron began.
Between the name Schumacher and Spa-Francorchamps, it is a great story of love and numbers. In 1992, for example, it was at Spa-Francorchamps that Michael Schumacher won the first victory of his career at the wheel of the Benetton B192. In 2004 after a totally crazy Grand Prix, he won his seventh and final world champion title. It is also here that in 2011 he celebrated his 20th career. A year later, Michael Schumacher celebrated his 300 starts in F1 during his last visit to the Ardennes.
Michael Schumacher holds several records on this circuit such as the number of victories (6), the number of podiums (9), the number of laps led (259) and the number of laps covered (602).
This weekend will therefore be another great moment in the life of Mick Schumacher, a few years after driving the Benetton B194 which saw the first title of Michael Schumacher's career in Formula 1.
“It was great, a pleasure for me to be able to drive, and so many emotions. It represents a piece of history, I’m happy to have been able to drive here.” he said at the time.
