Adrian Newey pleads for the alternative engine

Designer of genius, having greatly contributed to the domination in his time of Williams then McLaren, Adrian Newey rarely comes out of his reserve. Major architect of the success of Red Bull in recent years before the advent of V6 turbo / hybrid Power Units, the Briton recently confided in The National that the domination of Mercedes et Ferrari was not good for sport.

" For me, what is “unhealthy” F1 for the moment is the domination of the engines. Chassis regulations are restricted, engine regulations are very free. On top of that, if you take the engines built by Mercedes or Ferrari, when they supply these engines to other teams, the customers do not receive the same engine – not at the software level anyway. Software is becoming very important today. »

The Briton, who believes that Mercedes and Ferrari also dominate F1 behind the scenes, puts forward several solutions to remedy the problem, such as an engine supply, but also software and fuel, identical to the customer teams from the engine manufacturers. « There should be a different engine, an FIA engine, that smaller teams could use, an engine that would be competitive, Newey further adds. I think this would be a very good solution. But the manufacturers don't want it. »
