Are we getting closer to the outcome of the Piastri affair? The controversy, which erupted in early August whenOscar piastri firmly declared that he would not fly for Alpine in 2023 despite the announcement of the French team, could soon see a resolution. At least, legally speaking. Ahead of Free Practice 1, Otmar Szafnauer, team director Alpine, declared on Canal + that the CRB (FIA Contract Recognition Board) should rule on the matter this Monday, August 29, the day after the Belgian Grand Prix.

“It will be determined on Monday, announced the head of the French team. We have a contract with Oscar [Piastri], that's why we announced him as our driver for next year. It seems that now he has signed a contract with McLaren. In F1, you cannot sign two contracts. This is why we have the CRB, it is part of the Concorde Agreements. Other drivers have already tried what Oscar did in the past. We know our contract is valid. It's up to the Board to decide now. »

McLaren and Alpine obliged to comply with the CRB decision regarding Piastri

By signing the Concorde Agreement, the teams agreed to submit to the CRB, which means that they must comply with the decisions given by the institution. If the are built on? gives reason to Alpine, McLaren will then have to abandon the Piastri track, unless an amicable financial agreement is found between the two parties. Otherwise, McLaren would be free to sign the Australian driver permanently, without compensation.

As a reminder, the CRB, a council created by the FIA to ensure the conformity of “driver” contracts, found nothing wrong with the parchment drawn up by the lawyers of the McLaren team. There is no formal defect in this document which unites the Woking team with the Australian hopeful for – or from – the 2023 financial year. In form, it is legal… As is just as much as the one signed by the even Oscar Piastri with Alpine for the 2022 financial year. Response on Monday, to (perhaps) have the outcome of this matter.

If the CRB found no formal defect in the contract drawn up by McLaren's lawyers which unites Woking with the Australian from 2023, legality would therefore be on the side of the Oranges. Not good for the Blues… Well, this is going to end with a bunch of dollars as usual!
