Alex Wurz doesn't understand the Halo postponement

Alexander Wurz is disappointed by the decision of the Strategic Group of F1 de postpone the implementation of the Halo for one year initially planned for 2017. This cockpit protection system was postponed in order to have more time to carry out tests according to the teams who voted unanimously for its postponement.

The president of the Grand Prix Drivers Association does not understand the justifications for this postponement, according to him the Halo has been under study for several years.

“They started development in 2010, said the former pilot McLaren on Sky Sports. It didn’t happen suddenly and they presented this solution as feasible. According to them, this is better than any other proposal at the moment and this is what was presented to the pilots the previous week. I am therefore surprised by this change of heart which goes against the recommendation of the experts. It was already in the design offices of the single-seater designers with the technical guides. »

Alex Wurz also reacted to the arguments of opponents of Halo who believe that F1 must remain a discipline involving an element of risk.

“Spectators want to see emotion, moments where heroes become zeros, drivers spin and make mistakes, added Alexander Wurz. Accidents are an emotional part of life, but safety experts say we can maximize the chances of survival. I think that this system does not take away from the courage required. »
