Since 2018, Alfa Romeo became the name of the Sauber team in Formula 1. An association which will continue at least for one more season. “I signed the renewal for 2023 this morning (Friday)”, declared Jean-Philippe Imparato, the general director of the Italian brand, to Reuters.

“Every year in July we assess the situation, specifies the general director of Alfa Romeo. If in the future we realize that we are no longer interested in Formula 1 or that we do not have a return on our investments, we will see what to do, but everything will be done in an orderly manner. »

A coveted stable

The Hinwil (Switzerland) stable had been associated with other names recently. In October 2021, it was Andretti who returned with insistence to acquire Sauber Motorsport AG and Sauber Engineering under the tutelage of Islero Investments for 80% of the shares. “ It fell through due to governance problems during the final hours of the negotiations,” specified Michael Andretti when formalizing the arrival of Devlin DeFrancesco in his team for the 2022 IndyCar season.

“That’s what killed the deal.” I always said that if the deal wasn't good, we weren't going to try it. Ultimately it wasn't so we continue to look for other opportunities. Unfortunately, at the last minute, blocking points appeared in terms of the organization of the future structure. We therefore had to withdraw from the negotiations because we could not accept the conditions»

Recently, it was with Audi that Sauber was linked, the Volkswagen group brand seeking to enter the world championship from 2026, like Porsche, which plans to buy Red Bull at 50%.
