Allison: FIA didn't believe Mercedes could develop DDA

Mercedes F1 has not yet been able to highlight the potential of its W11 in competition, but the Silver Arrows surprised the entire paddock by using Dual Axis Steering during winter testing in Barcelona at the start of the year.

Avant the recovery planned for early July, the star manufacturer has published an interview (in English) with James Allison in which the technical director discusses the reasons which, according to him, prompted the FIA to make the team's find legal.

“It was a very complicated system to set up, recognized the British engineer. We actually wanted introduce it in 2019. We communicated our ideas to the FIA showing them why we thought it was legal. They admitted it, but didn't really like the way we had done things because the second axle was adjusted by a lever connected to the wheel. They said, “You have to be able to move the whole wheel.” » I think they were hoping it would be too difficult for us and that we would leave without causing them any more trouble. »

Mercedes will nevertheless have been able to develop Two-Axis Steering in compliance with the technical regulations in the space of less than a year.
