Alonso waited for the storm to end

Fernando Alonso, winner of the Bahrain Grand Prix, certainly did not expect to be eliminated in the first phase of the qualifying session. This seemed reserved for drivers from the three new teams. And yet?

« We expected the rain to stop, so we stayed in our stand longer than the others. When we got out, as the conditions had deteriorated and, even with the "extreme rain" tires, we were not able to improve our time. »

Fernando Alonso thus remained stuck in the cart, unable to climb among the first seventeen in Q1, due to the rain becoming too present on the track. The Spaniard even gave himself a little scare by spinning, a superb 720° (watch the video), trying to grab tenths.

« The rain could have made things spectacular but this session was like a lottery, continues Alonso. Today things went very wrong for us and we found ourselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, the poor qualifying result is only bad for the paper it is written on because the points will only be distributed at the end of the race. »

Even though he is only placed in 19th position on the grid, the Spaniard remains motivated and full of hope for the race. “ Certainly, this result puts us in a bad position for the race but, as we saw last Sunday in Melbourne, anything can happen and we must therefore have confidence in ourselves. We have to do our best to bring home points. »
