Alonso calms things down with McLaren

Fernando Alonso mysteriously regained confidence in the future of McLaren-Honda while the double world champion hid less and less his pessimism about the potential of his team handicapped by the performance and reliability concerns of the Japanese Power Unit. The Asturian is still chasing his first podium since his return to the Woking team in 2015.

“I'm really happy here and I think we can have the package to win the title, commented Fernando Alonso in the paddock of the Italian GP at Monza. We will see what the proposals will be for the future. If they are very good, we could sign an extension for two seasons, maybe just one, or three or five. I am quite young anyway (36 years old). »

Fernando Alonso has strongly denied speculation of an ultimatum from the Asturian who threatened to leave McLaren unless they break the contract with Honda, while congratulating Renault Sport F1 Team which had indicated that it was not yet efficient enough to satisfy the Spaniard.

“I will discuss with the team (McLaren) to find out what my options are for next year. We now have the elements to be champions, indicated Fernando Alonso. The team has progressed well over the past three years since my return. We have the talent and the infrastructure. We're just still lacking a bit in performance, which is the most important thing. I will make my decision based on what the simulations indicate for next year. »

If Fernando Alonso seems to want to ease tensions with McLaren during the negotiations, he justifies this new speech by making the comparison with the strong return of the Team Ferrari currently leading the Drivers' Championship with Sebastian Vettel.

“Ferrari took a big step forward in 2014-2015 with the engine. Everything progresses if we move in the right direction and the results quickly show it. I need to know what developments are planned. They have three years behind them and I think it’s possible.”, added Fernando Alonso.

Fernando Alonso has five retirements this season and ten Grands Prix and signed a 6th as his best result at the Hungarian GP last July.
