Alonso happy to drive the Renault RS20: “Really nice to rediscover these sensations”

Destiny can be facetious. On the same circuit which saw him perform his first laps with Benetton 20 years ago, Fernando Alonso returned to the track in Barcelona (Spain) to experience a reunion with the team Renault, this Tuesday, October 13.

Officially, the day of driving was only to be used to carry out promotional filming for the Losange. The double world champion Formula 1 in 2005 and 2006 completed around a hundred kilometers under the Catalan sun.

“It was amazing to be able to drive these cars after two years and feel all their speed again, how fast everything goes corner after corner, their braking performance and everything an F1 car has to offer. It was really nice to get those feelings back., for the first time since April 2019 and a test with McLaren in Bahrain.

The idea for this day was to get your bearings in the cockpit of the Renault RS20. “Most of the day was spent doing some filming with drones on the trail and other behind-the-camera action. At the same time, we worked with the team to do a few laps so that I could be comfortable with the seat, the steering wheel and the pedals. These are things for next year that might be difficult to do this winter. So these are our first steps”, adds the Asturian.

The beautiful words were linked in front of the cell phone of the Renault press officer. “I felt at home from the first day. There is this atmosphere enstone, and in this team, where everything is so simple and logical in everything they do. I am comfortable with Renault. Many of the people here today were already working as mechanics in my time. Everything is a little easier when you know the faces and the team. »
