Only two Grands Prix left: that's surely the phrase that's running over and over in everyone's head. Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard was once again betrayed by his mechanics, more precisely by his power unit Renault, during the Mexico Grand Prix. While he was sailing calmly in 7th position, one of the 6 cylinders of the French engine gave way, thus causing a significant power handicap. “I was driving with five cylinders and 20% less power. I was 20 seconds ahead of the McLaren and my teammate. So the race was exceptional until this moment…”

“For car number 14, there are still reliability problems”

Finally, a few minutes later, the engine of theAlpine gave up the ghost on the 63rd lap. A scene far too frequent this season for the double world champion. For him, the cup is full. Frustrated and furious with this 5th retirement this season, the driver Alpine did not mince his words towards his team. “For car number 14, there are still reliability issues, cursed Fernando Alonso after the Grand Prix. I think I lost 60 points this year, so if you add [the six points from 7th place in Mexico], it's 66. Obviously everyone else benefits, they score more points than they should . »

“It's just incredible that only one or two cars retire every race and there's always the #14 car, he added, pointing out the gap in reliability between his mount and that ofEsteban Ocon. I've broken five engines this year, I think. There was the problem in qualifying in Australia and in Austria I didn't even start [the sprint] because of the power outage. So I think that out of 19 races, in more or less 50% of them we didn't score the points we deserved. »

Alonso counts " 100% " the remaining days at Alpine

Frustrated all season by reliability problems, which cost him a good number of important points, Alonso admitted to counting "100%" the days remaining before the end of the 2022 season. The Spaniard even dared to comparison with the dark hours of the McLaren-Honda era to illustrate his anger towards Alpine and the difference in treatment that he believes within the French team. “In the first year with Honda we had 72 penalties, something like that. With Honda, both cars stopped. This year, only car #14 stops”, proclaimed the double world champion, who points out the lack of preparation of the French team.

“The engine cannot finish races. It can't be bad luck when you have to change six or seven engines like we did, and we still don't finish the races. I think that'Alpine] must work this winter, not too much I hope! » The divorce is well and truly consummated between Alpine and Fernando Alonso, who must have only one eagerness: to join Aston Martin in 2023.

Question for the incorrigible and persecuted Fernand: wouldn't he put much more strain on his engine than his teammate?
